LE CLAUX 2020 (Sylvain MOREY - La Bastide Du Claux)

New product

RHÔNE - AOP LUBÉRON - RED WINE
Grape varieties : Syrah (85%) - Grenache noir (15%)
Native yeasts Total destemming

Ageing in oak barrels, 1/2 muids & concrete tanks for 24 months

  • Nose: powerful and elegant. Notes of crunchy black fruits, black pepper, with a hint of vanilla and menthol.
  • Palate: full-bodied, structured by fine tannins.

Tasting date: April 2023.

OUR OPINION: we immediately recognise the slightly wild aromas of the Syrah planted on north-facing slopes. This cuvée offers a very nice aromatic complexity, dark and powerful, with a good cellar ageing capacity. Think of decanting it half an hour before, while it is young.

TERROIR

The cuvée LE CLAUX is a single-plot red wine composed of a blend of two red grape varieties planted in the place called Le Claux.
The 2020 vintage, hot and dry, allowed a very healthy harvest but with a low yield: 33 hl/ha maximum.
The harvest occured early, in order to keep a nice acidity and complexity in the blend.

The vineyard located at the place called Le Claux is situated at an altitude of 300-350 meters, it is oriented East-North East. It is one of the latest wineyard of the estate, the grapes maturation is very slow.
Its soil is composed of clayey marl, very rare in Luberon, which gives it a very high quality potential. Its genesis took place in the upper continental Tortonian, a geological period dating from -7 to -5 million years.

WINEGROWING & WINEMAKING

The vines are cultivated according to the principles of the Organic Farming. The 2020 vintage is still being converted to Organic culture in order to obtain the official ECOCERT label.

The grapes are harvested by hand, sorted and then totally destemmed, and placed in vats without crushing. The alcoholic fermentation starts spontaneously during the maceration phase with the grape varieties blended, at the end of which the must is pressed.
The press juice is blended with the free-run juice and the must is aged for 24 months in oak barrels, demi-muids and concrete vats.

Once the maturation is over, the must is racked and filtered by roughing filtration. It is then bottled.

Sulphiting is very light during the whole process (less than 2g/hl).
