Le VIGNOBLE du RÊVEUR - Alsace

Le Vignoble Du Rêveur - VignArtea

ALSACE    7 ha    BIODYNAMIC    WINEMAKER: Matthieu DEISS

ESTATE HISTORY

Le VIGNOBLE DU RÊVEUR is a small vineyard of 7 hectares, located in Bergheim and run by Mathieu DEISS, son of Jean-Michel DEISS. These few parcels, inherited from his maternal uncle and situated on a less expressive terroir than those of the domain Marcel DEISS, have become his laboratory of grape varieties expression and Mathieu works there with the Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir. The 45 to 50 years vines are grown according to the principles of Biodynamics and the wines are certified Demeter.

TERROIR

The varied landscapes of Alsace are the legacy of a turbulent geological history of nearly a billion years. The sedimentary deposits of the primary and secondary eras, whether marine, continental or lagoonal, cover the old magmatic rock base.

At the end of the Jurassic era, the region underwent volcanic activity followed by an erosive phase for 100 million years. In the Tertiary era, distensions and fractures lead to the subsidence and collapse of the keystone of the Rhine block with its sedimentary cover.

The alluvial plain occupies the center of the graben where the Rhine fault is hidden. Above the collapsed secondary ground, the marly Tertiary ground, 2000 to 2500 meters thick, is in turn covered by the Quaternary alluvium of the Vosges and Rhine rivers. It is in this soil that the vines of the VIGNOBLE DU RÊVEUR are planted, on the large alluvial cones of the rivers but also on the loess deposits brought by the wind.

The nature of the materials depends on the course of the rivers. Their mineral fertility is low and the presence of loess improves the soil quality. The daily sunshine is long, which is a viticultural asset provided that there is sufficient water available in the soil.

WINEGROWING & WINEMAKING

In this small vineyard located on a plain terroir that is less expressive than the hillside vineyard ones, Mathieu invents, innovates, mixes grape varieties, vinifies sometimes in sandstone or clay jars, sometimes in tuns, and composes wines with a unique identity and unprecedented flavors.

His winemaking is as simple and hands-off as possible. Fermentations take place in the presence of indigenous yeasts. For the musts made in jars, there are no added sulphites, and for the others, made in tanks or in oak barrels, just a small amount of sulphites are added if needed. The musts are not fined but lightly filtered.

The wines of the VIGNOBLE DU RÊVEUR are produced in the same cellars as those where the DEISS family produces its great terroir wines, there is no separate infrastructure for the two vineyards.
