In this region of the Loire, located between the sea and the rivers, the very old white Burgundy grape variety "melon de bourgogne" gives birth to the Muscadet designation wines. The latter can also bear the mention "sur lies" which specifies that the wines have remained in contact with their yeasts lees during their maturation in barrels or vats, and thus gain in complexity.
The "Muscadet Sèvre et Maine" is the largest designation: it is produced in the region south and east of Nantes, between two rivers, the Sèvre and the Maine.
