The Saint-Joseph designation represents 1,000 hectares of vineyards and stretches along the meanders of the Rhône over some 60 kilometers. For a long time, it remained in the shadow of its prestigious neighbors, Hermitage and Cornas, but this wine-growing region developed its reputation in the 19th century thanks to Victor Hugo, who in his work "Les Miserables" evoked the famous "vin de Mauves", which used to designate the crus.
