Bordeaux is more than a famous wine region. It is above all the symbol of exceptional wines and a reference for the whole wine world.
Conquered several times by very different peoples (Gascons, Saracens, Ostrogoths and Visigoths), it was even completely destroyed by the Vikings in 870, without ever interrupting wine growing. The real success of the region did not begin until 1152, when Aliénor d’Aquitaine married the future King of England and Duke of Normandy, Henry Plantagenêt. The important customs privileges granted to Gascony enabled it to become the main supplier to the English court and to London society.
