Located on the left bank of the Garonne and Gironde rivers, this wine-growing area is composed of stony and sandy soils originating from the Pyrenees, the Limousin and the Massif Central.
To the north, the Médoc region cultivates almost exclusively red grape varieties. To the west and south, the Graves and Sauternes region, with its Graves soil, produces aromatic and fine red wines, as well as good dry white wines and sweet wines.
Médoc, Haut-Médoc and village designations are the real home of the very famous Cabernet-Sauvignon. Four other types of grape varieties are available to Médoc winemakers: Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. They are used in different quantities and proportions in the cuvées.
