Bergerac is the most important and best known designation near Bordeaux. The vineyards have been cultivated since Roman times, and in the Middle Ages, it was one of the favorite fields of activity of the monasteries, an activity whose development was intimately linked to the presence of a river port.
Shipping to Northern Europe, with which the Bergerac trade had succeeded in forging links, gave rise to a special know-how in the blending and conservation of wines, a reputation which is confirmed today by the export of more than 15% of the production to Northern Europe.
