Information

URSA MAJOR is a blend of the same 5 grape varieties that make up the LA GRANDE OURSE Red cuvée, but in different proportions: Grenache Noir is heavily predominant (80%), while the remaining 20% is shared between Mourvèdre, Syrah, Counoise, and Muscardin—a nearly forgotten grape variety native to the Vaucluse. Muscardin is only ever used in blends, where it brings freshness and acidity to the whole structure.

Terroir

AGE OF VINES: N/A.

LOCATION: selected plots located in the commune of Tulette.

EXPOSURE: hillside vineyards, mostly East-facing.

TERROIR: sandy-clay loam soil of fluvial origin dating back to the MINDEL glacial period.

Viticulture & Vinification

HARVEST: manual / hand-picked.

YIELD: N/A.

SORTING: in the vineyard.

VINIFICATION: the 5 grape varieties are vinified separately. Grapes are destemmed and crushed, then macerated for 3 weeks in vats. Fermentation is carried out using indigenous yeasts. After pressing the must, the press juice and free-run juice are blended, with the exception of the Grenache Noir, for which only the free-run juice is kept.

AGEING: 12 months in:

  • demi-muids for the Syrah, Counoise, and Muscardin
  • oval foudres (large oak casks) for the Grenache Noir
  • 228-liter barrels for the Mourvèdre

BOTTLING: blending of the musts at the end of the ageing process without fining, followed by filtration before bottling.

CORK: natural cork.

Sommelier's Note

"Enticing and charming, this wine offers a fruity nose of black cherry juice underlined by a subtle hint of pepper and coffee. The palate reveals itself to be round and juicy, boasting a delicate texture and a persistent finish on dark fruit; a convivial wine that will benefit from breathing in a decanter for a short quarter of an hour before serving to express its full potential!"
