Terroir

VINE AGE:  N/A.

LOCATION: the Grand Cru terroir of Altenberg is located on the steep slopes of the Grasberg, between 220 and 320 metres above sea level.

EXPOSURE: facing due South, the vineyard enjoys a remarkably dry and warm climate. The hillside is sheltered from rainfall, allowing a slow and steady ripening of the grapes, which can encourage the development of noble rot (botrytis) depending on the vintage.

TERROIR : the Altenberg de Bergheim terroir is exceptional for its geological diversity. It lies on Middle Jurassic (DOGGER) and Triassic (MUSCHELKALK) formations; the soils are stony, fossil-rich, red clay-limestone. They endow the Pinot Gris with a saline mineral backbone that brings superb length on the palate.

Sommelier's Note

"The aromatic persistence of this Grand Cru, re-tasted in 2021, is impressive and its fragrances are exquisite: toasted hazelnut, apricot, lychee, exotic fruits, spices, and honey, all enhanced by a subtle touch of smoke. Blessed with a still-vibrant natural acidity, this Grand Cru offers a tension that perfectly balances the residual sugars. This is a wine that doesn't call for dessert, but rather a pairing of contrasts: a pungent Gorgonzola or Fourme d'Ambert blue cheese, a chicken coconut milk curry, or pan-seared foie gras. Be sure to serve it at 10-12°C (50-54°F), as a temperature too cool will close up the aromas, while serving it too warm will make the wine feel heavy!"
