CAPRIERS 2022 (Sylvain MOREY - La Bastide Du Claux)

RHÔNE - AOP LUBÉRON - RED WINE
Grape varieties: Syrah (40%) - Grenache noir (25%) - Pinot noir (20%) - Nebbiolo (15%)

Native yeasts Total destemming

Ageing in oak barrels, 1/2 muids & concrete tanks for 24 months

  • Nose: intense, slightly mentholated. Notes of black fruit, licorice and peppermint.

  • Palate: firm tannic structure. Long blackberry finish.
  • Tasting date: July 2025 after one-hour decanting

  • OUR OPINION: the presence of Nebbiolo, an Italian grape known for its rich tannins, is certainly not unrelated to the still-tight structure of this vintage. However, after a good decanting and a carefully chosen accompaniment, this vintage, drunk in its youth, reveals itself to be juicy and highly digestible. It will be superb with a few extra years of ageing.

TERROIR

The cuvée CAPRIERS is a single-plot red wine composed of a blend of two red grape varieties planted in the place called Capriers.

The vineyard located at the place called Capriers is situated at an altitude of 430-450 meters, it is oriented North East.
Its soil dates from the ancient ancient Quaternary, 1 million years ago, and rests on the pebbled terraces of the Durance: it is made up of Cretaceous limestone and flint, red clayey silt, sand and fragments of molassic rocks.

By combining clay soils and a cool microclimate, this terroir has a strong potential in warmer periods. We find very old Syrah vines that have been gradually supplemented with other grape varieties.

2022 is a year that will live long in our memories, marked as it was by a severe drought and two heatwaves in summer. Thanks to the special terroir of Capriers, the Syrah variety did not suffer too much from the lack of water, unlike the Pinot Noir.

This year, the Nebbiolo variety completes the blend, giving it a very pleasant, juicy profile.

WINEGROWING & WINEMAKING

The vines are cultivated according to the principles of the Organic Farming

The grapes are harvested by hand, sorted and then totally destemmed, and placed in vats without crushing. The different grape varieties are placed together in vats for a maceration period of around twelve days, during which the alcoholic fermentation begins spontaneously.

Once the maceration phase is over, the press juice is blended with the free-run juice, and the must is aged for 24 months in 600-liter demi-muids.

The must is then racked without fining nor filtering before bottling.

Sulphiting is very light during the whole process (less than 2g/hl).
