INFORMATION

The red wine LA GRANDE OURSE is a blend of 5 grape varieties: a majority of Grenache Noir (55%), Mourvèdre (30%), Syrah (10%), with the remaining 5% consisting of Counoise and Muscardin—a nearly forgotten grape variety native to the Vaucluse. Muscardin, always used in blending, brings freshness and a beautiful acidity to the final wine.

Terroir

AGE OF VINES: N/A.

LOCATION: parcel plots located in the commune of Tulette.

EXPOSURE: hillside vineyards, mostly East-facing.

TERROIR:

  • on the terraces, the vines sit on Rissian alluvial deposits dating back to the Quaternary ice ages (2 million years ago), composed of limestone gravel with occasional presence of flint and siliceous sandstone,

  • on the hillsides, the vines grow on a thick layer of sandy-clay loam, more or less gravelly, whose fluvial deposits are more recent.

Viticulture & Vinification

HARVEST: manual / hand-picked.

YIELD: N/A.

SORTING: in the vineyard.

VINIFICATION: destemming followed by crushing of the grapes; 3-week maceration in vats. Alcoholic fermentation with indigenous yeasts. After maceration, pressing of the musts, then blending of the press juice and free-run juice for all grape varieties, except for the Grenache Noir, for which only the free-run juice is kept.

AGEING: 12 months in:

  • demi-muids for the Syrah, Counoise, and Muscardin
  • truncated cone-shaped oak vats for the Grenache Noir
  • 228-liter barrels for the Mourvèdre

BOTTLING: blending of the musts at the end of the ageing process without fining, followed by filtration before bottling.

CORK: natural cork.

Sommelier's Note

"Beautifully rich, this promising cuvée opens with an enticing nose marked by complex notes of black fruits, eucalyptus, and chocolate. The palate, dense and finely structured, displays a remarkable balance that will blossom fully after a year or two of cellaring, or can be enjoyed today by decanting a few hours before serving."
