OUR OPINION: the very clayey terroir of Barroux tends to close the Syrah wines. The nose is reduced on opening, and it is essential to decant it for a few hours so that it can breathe. It will benefit from 5 to 8 years of cellar ageing.
The SYRAH LE BARROUX cuvée is part of a trilogy of single varietal Syrah wines, reflecting the three terroirs that make up the estate's vineyard. If the SYRAH ENTREVON cuvée evokes the Malaucène basin sandy terroirs (place called Entrevon), the SYRAH LE BARROUX wine comes from the marl terroir of the Barroux village.
The vines at the origin of the SYRAH LE BARROUX cuvée are planted on plots located at places called Saint-Jean and Pié-Conieu, on a terroir dating from the Stampien or Rupélien, the lower Oligocene stage (-33 to -28 million years ago).
In the Stampien, the tectonic activity of the region enters a distensive phase at the origin of the basins collapse. There were many lakes and lagoons, in a sub-tropical context with dry seasons. The lakes and lagoons receive detrital inputs which sediment, depending on their nature, in thick limestone beds or colored marls. This limestone and marl alternation constitutes the basement of the Barroux village, and it is covered on the surface with a layer of colluvium coming from the slopes.
The estate's vines are cultivated according to the Organic Agriculture principles and the wines are certified by Ecocert. In order to limit fungal attacks as much as possible, some grape bunches are deliberately removed in order to ventilate the vines at the maximum, which limits yields.
The grapes are picked manually, and the harvest is destemmed. The stalks are carefully sorted and preserved. 25% of them are added to the grapes and the whole is placed in concrete tanks for a skin and stems maceration of 20 days.
The must is then drawn off in enamelled vats for an 18-month ageing.
The wine is not fined but filtered before bottling.
