Burgundy and its wines are mythical in the wine world. The first traces of the Burgundian vineyard date back to the 2nd century. It is likely that the Celts were cultivating vines and making wine before the Romans arrived. Burgundy's viticultural history in medieval times was of great importance to the whole of Europe.
The different types of soil in Burgundy play a major role. The prestigious terroirs are made up exclusively of limestone soils. The clay-limestone or marl-limestone soils of the Côte d'Or were formed by the gradual erosion of the high limestone plateaus of the Jura. This is why we can find such a variety of terroirs in a small area, whose characteristics are reflected in the personality of each wine. On the Côte Chalonnaise and in the Mâconnais, the limestone outcrops are rarer and are mixed with loamy and sandy soils.
