CORNAS LE VILLAGE 2018 (Yves CUILLERON)

  • Nose: rich and generous. Very concentrated black fruit aromas (blackberries and blueberries), notes of white pepper and cinnamon.

  • Palate: structured. Tannins of great finesse. Tasty juice with a long finish.
  • Tasting date: April 2021.

  • OUR OPINION: Cornas are wines destined to age, this one is no exception to the rule, but it is already very beautiful in its youth, as 2018 is an excellent vintage, which suggests the development of beautiful tertiary aromas over time.

DESCRIPTION

The CORNAS VILLAGE cuvée is a single varietal Syrah wine which vines are planted on three plots located on the terraces of localities having the same granitic terroir.

TERROIR

The grapes come from three plots located on the localities of Les Côtes, Reynard, and Cayret.

The soil consists of a crystallophyllian granite rock which was formed 600 million years ago during a continental collision with subduction of the ocean floor under the immense continent of the time : the Gondwana continent.

This collision led to the intermediate pressure metamorphism of a sedimentary rock made of sandstone and shale which gave rise to a calcareous alkaline granite with biotite which constitutes the plots terroir base of the Cornas Village wine.

WINEGROWING & WINEMAKING

The grapes are vinified plot by plot. Their blending will only take place at the time of bottling.

The grapes are cultivated according to the principles of the sustainable agriculture which dissuades systematic treatments and encourages the phytosanitary products use only in case of strict necessity linked to strongly unfavorable weather conditions.

The grapes are harvested manually, partially destemmed and then crushed. The skins macerate with the juice for about three weeks in open tanks. Punching down and pumping-over operations are regularly carried out and make it possible to mix the marc cap which forms on the surface with the fermenting must.

The alcoholic fermentation starts spontaneously under the native yeasts actions, and the malolactic fermentation takes place in oak barrels, when the must is racked after the three weeks of maceration.

This is followed by an ageing phase for 18 months in oak barrels.

The musts of the different plots are then blended and bottled after fining.

The bottle is closed by a cork of the DIAM20®'s brand, specially designed to guarantee zero wine's contamination by the cork, called "cork taste", thanks to the use of the cork flower previously cleared from the molecule responsible for this aromatic deviance.
