The vineyards of this part of southern France had their first heyday under the Romans, when amphorae containing wine from the province of Gallia Narbonensis enjoyed an excellent reputation, even in Rome, and were exported as far away as Germania. With the fall of the Roman Empire the wines lost their international dimension.
But in the early 1980s, a miracle occurred thanks to young winegrowers who knew how to highlight the potential of the region, reducing yields, increasing the planting density in the new vineyards, and selecting the best plots. Since then, the Languedoc has produced remarkable wines with a distinctive Mediterranean character.
