At Domaine Jean BOURDY, history is inextricably linked with that of the Jura vineyards. Founded in 1579 in Arlay, it is one of the oldest wine estates in France. For over five centuries and through 16 generations, the Bourdy family has jealously guarded this exceptional heritage, preserving the true soul of the terroir.
The estate is renowned for its historical memory: its cellars house one of the most impressive collections of very old vintages dating back to the 19th century. Here, the transmission of ancestral gestures and expertise is a sacred duty. As proof, the family still crafts the mythical Galant des Abbesses. This spiced liqueur wine, whose unchanged recipe of 25 spices dates back to 1579, stands as a living testament to medieval craftsmanship. The Jean Bourdy estate is now managed by Laura Bourdy.
The estate has been certified in Organic Farming and Biodynamics (Demeter) since 2010. The soils are meticulously worked, and the vines are nourished with biodynamic preparations.
In the cellar, winemaking is as natural as possible, without any additives. Fermentations are always carried out using indigenous yeasts. The white wines, crafted from Savagnin, undergo traditional Jura aging "sous voile" (under a yeast film) in old oak barrels for 3 to 4 years for the Côtes-du-Jura. These ancient barrels, true guardians of the yeast, are never replaced to ensure the development of a high-quality "voile," essential for producing Savagnin or Vin Jaune of great complexity.
The estate's range is extensive and prestigious: delicate red wines aged in large foudres (Poulsard, Trousseau, Pinot Noir), distinctive whites with great aging potential, a legendary Château-Chalon, as well as the essential Macvin and Vin Jaune. A consistency and a demand for authenticity that make Jean Bourdy a true institution.
